Why your baby wakes at 5am (and what you can do about it)

If your baby is treating 5am like the start of the day, you’re not alone. Early waking is one of the most common sleep challenges parents face and while it’s frustrating, it’s also very fixable once you understand what’s going on.

Why is my baby waking so early?

Early morning waking usually comes down to one (or a combination) of these factors:

  • Overtiredness: It sounds backwards, but babies who go to bed too late often wake earlier. When cortisol (the stress hormone) rises, it can disrupt those precious early morning hours.

  • Bedtime that’s too early or too late: There’s a “sweet spot” for sleep. Too early can lead to a full night’s sleep ending at dawn, while too late can cause restless, shortened sleep.

  • Nap imbalance: Too much daytime sleep or not enough can both affect morning wake time. It’s all about balance.

  • Sleep environment changes: Early morning light creeping in, birds chirping, or household noise can signal “time to wake.”

  • Hunger: Especially for younger babies, early waking may simply mean they need a feed.

  • Habitual waking: If your baby has been waking at 5am for a while, their internal clock may now expect it.

What can you do about it?

The good news: small adjustments can make a big difference.

  • Shift bedtime carefully
Aim for an age-appropriate bedtime (often between 6:30–7:30pm for many babies). If your baby is overtired, an earlier bedtime can actually help them sleep longer.

  • Review naps
Make sure daytime sleep is balanced. If naps are too long or too short, tweak gradually rather than making big sudden changes.

  • Create a sleep-friendly environment
Use blackout blinds to keep the room dark until your desired wake time. Early morning light is one of the biggest culprits of early waking.

  • Pause before responding
If your baby wakes at 5am, give them a few minutes. Sometimes they’ll resettle on their own.

  • Set a consistent “start of day”
Treat anything before your chosen wake time (e.g., 6am) as night. Keep interactions calm, lights low, and stimulation minimal.

  • Feed strategically (if needed)
For younger babies, a quiet early morning feed can help them return to sleep.

  • Be consistent
Early waking won’t usually fix overnight but consistency over several days can reset your baby’s internal clock.

A final thought

Babies aren’t wired to follow the clock we guide them there. Early waking is often a sign that something in the sleep schedule needs a gentle tweak, not that you’re doing anything wrong.

With the right adjustments and a bit of patience, those 5am wake-ups can shift to a much more manageable start to the day.

and yes, a 6 or 7am wake-up is absolutely possible.
